British economy shrinks

The british economy slumped at the start of the corona crisis. However, the jolt was not quite as severe as analysts had feared.

According to the british statistics office ONS, gross domestic product in the first quarter was 2.0 percent below the level of the previous quarter. Analysts had expected a 2.6 percent drop on average.

The decline was only about half that of the euro zone, which contracted by 3.8 percent in the first quarter. However, public life in great britain was curtailed much later than in many countries of the euro zone. The british government was initially reluctant to impose severe restrictions, but has since corrected this course considerably.

Growth data for march show that this rate correction has weighed heavily on the british economy. This month, the economy contracted by 5.8 percent, according to the ONS. It’s a record run. However, here too, market expectations were even more truer, with a drop of 8.0 percent on average expected. Services and construction activity contracted the most, while manufacturing suffered slightly less.

The slump in the first quarter is the biggest blow to the british economy since the severe financial and economic crisis of 2008 and 2009. For the year as a whole, the british central bank expects a drastic slump of 14 percent. This prediction is much more pessimistic than the expectations of many economists and international institutions. However, the bank of england also expects a strong economic recovery for the kingdom in 2021.

When sea noise becomes visible

The roar of the sea, when the waves break on the shore, is formally audible, the salt of the spray can be tasted on the tongue and the sand can be traced under the feet. Vacation mood breaks over the viewer without restraint when he stands in front of the coarse-format, overwhelming paintings of bayreuth painter gudrun schuler.

The artist is "the sixth", an exhibition of the producer gallery burgkunstadt, dedicated to. Still to be seen until 2. December. Saturday was the vernissage. These are pictures of visible reality, as bamberg art historian matthias liebel told the visitors, who had come from all over bavaria, in his opening speech. "Subject painting, which gives us at once to recognize what is represented", he lectures.

Clouds breathed onto canvas

And this is not only true for the sea motifs. There’s a forest path that radiates tranquility like the reflections on the surface of a lake. And the stone, which creates concentric waves in the water, is actually heard splashing. Just like the gentle murmur of a stream. Not to forget the cloud formations, sometimes breathed onto the canvas by the artist, sometimes brought to life with powerful brushstrokes, seemingly threatening.

Gudrun schuler is a master of true-to-life reproduction and works with photographic precision. On the other hand, she also shows abstract works in the produzentengalerie burgkunstadt, which also deal with her themes of water, clouds and nature. Matthias liebel: "in the paintings of gudrun schuler, which she executes in oil on canvas, it is almost always about atmospheric moods, about light, about refractions and reflections at the same time."

Gudrun schuler, born in upper franconia, lives and works in bayreuth and bindlach. She attended numerous courses at various art schools and most recently completed a four-year course of study in fine arts at the faber-castell academy in nurnberg, graduating with a certificate in 2004. Gudrun schuler took part in her first art exhibitions as early as 1989. Numerous group and solo exhibitions at home and abroad followed – in the meantime more than 240 exhibitions.

Since 1992 she has been freelancing with her own studio in bayreuth and bindlach. Gudrun schuler is represented with her works in many public collections; among others in collections of the cities of bayreuth, rehau and bamberg as well as in collections of the state of bavaria and the state painting collection in munich. She has received numerous prizes and awards for her work, including the audience award at the bayreuth art exhibition and the PEMA art prize for painting.

Sculptures on display as well

The vernissage, musically accompanied by the guitar virtuoso thomas schaller from marktzeuln, was opened by christine frieb, mayor of the city of burgkunstadt. The exhibition – which also features sculptures by sculptors adalbert heil (bamberg) and rainer kurka (berlin) – is on display until 2. December at the produzentengalerie fur gegenwartskunst, schonberg 3 in burgkunstadt. Opening hours are saturdays and sundays from 14 to 18 o’clock.

The producer gallery burgurgadt for contemporary art was opened in february 2018 by lucia scheid-nam, a painter from south korea, and her husband otto scheid, in the immediate vicinity of the artist’s studio. In burgkunstadt, supra-regional art from lower bavaria and upper franconia will be presented. The painter, who was born in south korea, also liked to use her contacts to bring well-known artists from asia and all over europe to burgkunstadt.

Jan palach and the fanal from wenzelsplatz never love ingo cesaro loose

Of course the synagogue in kronach is a fitting place for cesaro’s jan palach project to be presented for the first time. The actresses ulrike mahr and lucie lechner (munich) were also present. Both staged the bilingual palach poems. Ute fischer peterson, who was responsible for the musical interjections, offered the listeners an opportunity to reflect on what they had heard during the breaks between speeches.

No easy stuff, this fanal of jan palach, who turned out to be torch number one on 16. January 1969 on the wenzelsplatz and on 19. January died of the consequences of severe burns.

After welcoming the guests and introducing the artists involved, cesaro talked about the local partnership for democracy "demokratie leben" in the district of kronach, which made this literary project possible. Among the guests he was able to bury sabine nachtrab, who is in charge of the coordination office at the VHS.

Dramatic end

Warsaw pact tanks crushed the democracy movement known as "prague spring" in august 1968, down. Cesaro referred to the action program of the CP of april 1968, where the new thinking was written down. It was about the right of assembly, freedom of the press and the abolition of censorship. The burgers could travel abroad.

Before that, in june 1968, the "manifesto of a thousand words" was published published by ludvik vaculik. Dubcek arrested and deported to moscow. There, together with ludvic svoboda, he signed the "moscow protocol". The idea of "socialism with a human face is rolled down by tanks. Gustav husak takes over the KP presidium. There are slight improvements.

Now lucie lechner and ulrike mahr recited the poems "dein herz verbrannt nicht" (your heart is not burned) by ludvik vaculik, "an unknown hand and "on the wenzelsplatz alternately in czech and german. Impressive the soft voice of lechner. You could see the emotion in both of them, because ulrike mahr still noticed how much the poems had impressed her. And lucie lechner felt honored to be allowed to participate in this jan palach project.

In the second part, cesaro went into the fanal. On thursday, the 16. January 1969, around 3 p.M., jan palach put down his briefcase, took off his coat and doused himself with the contents of a can of gasoline, and toasted himself. Like a torch he ran across the wenzel square. If a tram conductor hadn’t had the presence of mind to throw his coat over jan palach, he would have died immediately. Although 85 percent of his skin was burned, jan palach did not die until the 19th. January 1969. Again and again he emphasized that he was not a suicidal person. Mountains of letters and cards reached the hospital. The doctor jarolslava moserova read many to him. Again and again jan palach asked if the government had already reacted. He is also known for his saying, handed down by his student leader lubos holecek: "I expected to survive, but I did not rule out death."

The next poems were "heavy dreams", "loud teeth rattling" and "silence and in the second block "a nightmare", "we kept our distance" and "the calculation did not work out.

Cesaro’s entanglements

Cesaro had started writing poems about it in january 1969, but at first he only managed one line: "the sons sacrifice themselves for the future of their fathers". There is no sequence for the poems. And in conversation with his friend and translator josef hrubĂ˝ he always talked about how the poems sounded in czech. 1999 cesaro was invited to read at the prague p.E.N. Invited. There he read the jan palach cycle in german and josef hrubĂ˝ the czech version. The czech colleagues did not agree with the topic, because at that time jan palach was still an unperson.

During the discussion that followed, the bulgarian doctor maria vojtova revealed herself as the author of the book "porc jsem nemluvila", which means: "why i kept silent for so long" heibt. For three years she had been afraid to publish this book, because she had been looking after jan palach for three days when he died as an assistant physician in the hospital. She was very excited and fell on the way home, fell into a coma and died after 14 days. The czech colleagues accused cesaro of being responsible for the doctor’s death. Only many months later this accusation was dropped.

At the end ulrike mahr and lucie lechner read the poems "in these mad times" and "love for his people. And finally the sentence in czech and german: "your heart did not burn, jan palach!"

"You have shown your colors with your visit today", said cesaro at the end and that he was still up to his neck in this project and that today’s event should free him from it a little bit. In the end he quoted friedrich bonhoeffer: "we must grasp the spokes of the wheel ourselves".

No solidarity for police costs - werder threatens legal action

After the crushing defeat in the vote on a solidarity fund in professional soccer, werder bremen’s management immediately switched to attack mode.

The clear rejection by the first and second division clubs of werder’s proposal, put forward at the members’ meeting of the german soccer league, to share the costs of police operations at high-risk matches among all the clubs’ shoulders only spurred on bremen’s fighting spirit even more.

"In order to represent the interests of werder, we will have no choice but to take legal action. We would have liked to avoid this situation. But we have to do everything we can to minimize the damage that the state of bremen is imposing on us," klaus filbry, werder’s chairman of the board, said in a club statement.

Bayern munchen’s chairman karl-heinz rummenigge criticized the league rival for this plan. "I have no understanding that SV werder bremen now even wants to sue the german fubball league. In the 19-year history of the DFL, since its founding in 2000, this step represents an absolute novelty," said rummenigge in response to a dpa inquiry. "The idea of solidarity has always been a strong one among all members of the DFL, which werder bremen should not question in this matter either."

However, this is precisely the crux of the matter, as the people of bremen feel that they have been left in the lurch by the other associations in the dispute. "We have noticed today that there is no solidarity with werder bremen. Werder is isolated," summed up bremen’s president hubertus hess-grunewald as he left the noble conference hotel outside frankfurt.

Rummenigge had previously justified the rejection of bremen’s application as follows: "we cannot be in solidarity with werder bremen because it would be the completely wrong sign. If we were to set up a fund, it would be an open tur and a must for all countries to ask the bundesliga to pay for it. We can not accept this."

Werder’s supervisory board chairman marco bode replied to the bayern boss via his club’s website: "karl-heinz rummenigge and we obviously have a different understanding of what solidarity means. Furthermore, it is not our idea, but has been established by all courts that werder and the DFL are organizers."From bode’s point of view, it is quite possible that werder got into this situation through no fault of its own.

Rummenigge received support from borussia dortmund’s managing director hans-joachim watzke: "there is no reason for the DFL to subsidize the bremen government’s unilateral action. I am of the opinion that the state of bremen is on the wrong track."

Of the 34 clubs present – only the representatives of the second-division clubs hannover 96 and vfl osnabruck were absent from the two-hour meeting in neu-isenburg – 32 voted against the bremen proposal. RB leipzig abstained. This leaves werder fully liable for the costs of 1.17 million euros invoiced by the state of bremen.

The bills, which were initially paid by the DFL, will now be passed on to werder. However, half of the total amount will be deferred until the final legal clarification has been made. The federal administrative court in leipzig ruled in march that the federal states could in principle charge the DFL for the additional police costs at high-security matches. The DFL intends to take the legal dispute to the federal constitutional court in any case. It remains to be seen when this will happen.

Until that happens, future fee assessments will have to be borne by the association concerned alone. Werder therefore considers not selling tickets to guest fans at high-risk matches in the future. "This is not a threat from us. We were already confronted with this issue by the bremen police in april," said hess-grunewald. If it had come at that time in the semifinal of the DFB cup to the north derby against the hamburger SV, the bremer had not been allowed to sell 1200 guest tickets.

Currently, fee notices are only levied by the bremen senate. In rhineland-palatinate and hamburg, however, there are said to be at least considerations for a similar regulation. "I think if other clubs were also affected, the situation had to be reassessed," said werder president hess-grunewald.

Rummenigge flatly rejects it. "In principle we have no understanding to be involved in the police costs. We all pay an insane amount of taxes. I have in mind the three-digit million sums that bayern munchen will be paying. We agree with the minister of the interior that this will definitely not happen in bavaria."

Hesse also rejects the bremer model. "The state has the sole monopoly on the use of force and must fulfill this task of ensuring security and order at soccer matches as well," affirmed interior minister peter beuth. The DFL decision prevents "even blameless clubs from being held jointly liable for incorrect decisions made by bremen’s politicians".

Tenant licenses for migrants

The faces of the 14 migrants who received the so-called "tenant driver’s license" in the meeting room of the town hall in burgkunstadt were beaming ou received the following. They successfully participated in a four-evening training course that familiarized them with proper behavior as apartment tenants. The course content was.B. Gauze separation, rest periods, proper heating and airing, and fire protection. With the "tenant driver’s license" acquired in this way refugees should be able to prove their suitability as reliable and serious tenants to potential landlords in the future. Living in their own apartment, the mostly young people who are all housed in the weismain, altenkunstadt and burgkunstadt area know, is better than living in a communal shelter. In order to improve their situation, karin pfeiffer, integration counselor at the district administration office, started the tenant qualification project together with volunteers. Half of the participants are already recognized asylum seekers and some of them already have a job. Still, finding private housing is a challenge. Many recognized asylum seekers, even though they are allowed to move out, must continue to live in cramped shared housing because they cannot find a rental apartment in the district, says the head of social services at the district office, ralf luger. Such courses are therefore a bit of help for self-help. They are also required by the bavarian ministry of the interior. But it also depends on the volunteers who accompany people on their new journey. Such are angelika geyer and nicole hartfil. For both, there was a flower robbery. German language, tenant’s driver’s license, a job of their own and then an apartment – successes are coming, explains angelika geyer. Thanks to the protestant parish in burgkunstadt, which provided the space for the course in the cafe dialog.

35 participants completed the training program consisting of several modules in 2018 and spring 2019 and received their tenant driver’s license.

horse expert monty roberts as guest in hohn am berg

Trust. The word came up often that evening. With monty roberts, one of the world’s most famous horse experts has come to the schlusselfeld district of hohn am berg. About 500 people did not want to miss the appearance of the now 83-year old.

Lena hegler and her father stefan traveled from schwarzenau. Already one and a half hours before the start of the show they looked around in the "king stables", watched the preparations. "It was all very exciting," says lena a few hours later. Of course, they had already heard about monty roberts and his philosophy beforehand. "But to see it all for yourself, that was impressive," confirms her father. The heglers have three horses at home on their farm. Lena grew up with the animals. One thing is clear to father and daughter from all these years: a calm and clear approach helps. "You just need a good feeling," says stefan hegler.

Four horses, one approach to a solution

Monty roberts has internalized all this. No wonder: at the age of three, he sat on the back of a horse for the first time, later he intensively observed the behavior of wild horses and derived his lessons from it. Four horses are presented to him in hohn am berg. The owners all have their very own concerns with the animals. One has never tolerated a rider on it, another bucks, the third is extremely skittish and the fourth just won’t get into a hanger.

Monty roberts and his helpers always follow the same method. First they "read" the horse, want to gain its trust. It only takes a few minutes, then each horse shows its typical body language, tips its ear, chews and licks, and finally lowers its head. Now monty roberts can work with the horses – without pressure, never with violence. "Horses always want to be in a safe place," he says. "It is up to us to show you this place."

He also succeeds in winning the trust of the horses in hohn am berg. His assistant rides the three-year-old stallion, who has never tolerated a rider before. "Seppi", the buckler, also accepts a rider after a period of habituation and sophie willingly walks into the hanger with monty roberts after a few minutes. "We have to show the horses that they don’t have to be afraid," he explains. "We must win their trust and never abuse it."

The 83-year-old has worked with around 70,000 horses during his career, and with more than 12,000 in front of audiences. Not everywhere it meets with undivided love. Roberts did not invent the "join up" method, but merely marketed it professionally, according to trade journals. And: on some horses he exerts a psychological pressure. In hohn am berg all this does not come up of course. Monty roberts markets himself and his performances professionally, captivating his fans.

Help for ex-soldiers

Over the decades, working with people has become more important to him, he says. He has been working with former soldiers since 1953. "Horse sense and healing" is the name of the program. Horse sense and healing. "In the army, soldiers have to think like machines," recalls the man who lives in california and is currently touring germany. "The trust is trained out of them."

When they are discharged after decades of service, they suddenly have to find their way in a world where trust plays a fundamental role. "The head can’t keep up with this change at all," explains monty robert. Working with the horses, the veterans learn to trust again. Volker weigand has experienced this phenomenon first hand in the last few days. He spent 26 years as a soldier in the german army in various countries, including afghanistan. Weigand reported a stress syndrome.

In hohn am berg, he climbed into the fenced-off area himself, did the so-called "join up" with a horse in front of an audience. Afterwards, he briefly answered questions from the moderator. "I find peace myself," he explains, close to tears. "To feel the trust of the horses is simply amazing."

Leadership crisis at thyssenkrupp: foundation emphasizes unity

In the dispute over the future course of the industrial group thyssenkrupp, IG metall and the krupp foundation, which has come in for criticism, have spoken out with a joint commitment to continuity.

"The foundation and employee representatives have always stood up together for the stability of the company. That will not change in the future," the newspaper westdeutsche allgemeine zeitung quoted foundation head ursula gather and markus grolms, who sits on the supervisory board of the group on behalf of IG metall, as saying on tuesday. With a 21 percent stake, the foundation is the largest shareholder in the dax company.

Meanwhile, north rhine-westphalia’s minister president armin laschet (CDU) invited representatives of the company and the union to a meeting. The date was scheduled for thursday, it was said from government circles. The "rheinische post" had previously reported that. Since the end of last year, laschet has also been a member of the board of trustees of the krupp foundation under the leadership of gather.

Following the surprise resignation of thyssenkrupp boss henrich hiesinger last week, accusations were made against the foundation that it had not given the group boss enough backing in his dealings with critical investors. Shareholders such as the swedish financial investor cevian and the U.S. Hedge fund elliott had attacked hiesinger, in some cases sharply.

In response to the resignation, the works council had warned of a breakup of the conglomerate. Against this backdrop, the staff had urged gather to abide by its articles of association, the "rheinische post" reported. "The purpose of the foundation should be to promote the unity of fried. The newspaper quoted from the preamble to the foundation’s articles of association: "we want to preserve krupp in accordance with the will of its forefathers for the future as well. The foundation is free to manage the assets, but in the spirit of the founder and his ancestors, it should ensure that the unity of the company is preserved as far as possible.

Fed chief believes moderate rate hikes still appropriate

Federal reserve chief jerome powell has held out the prospect of a continuation of moderate interest rate increases in the U.S. At the traditional meeting of note bankers in jackson hole (state of wyoming), he emphasized that he believed this was the right course to take.

Powell was also responding to criticism from the weiben haus. U.S. President donald trump had stated several times that he could not understand the federal reserve’s interest rate increases. Trump fears that the boom in the US economy, which was also caused by tax stimuli, could be stalled.

There are currently no signs of "an elevated risk of overheating," powell said, adding, "that’s good news."Inflation has reached the two percent target range, but there is no clear evidence to suggest that the pace of price increases is accelerating.

The leading central banker gave the U.S. Economy a good report card. "The economy is strong. Inflation is close to our two percent target and most people looking for a job are finding one," powell said. The central bank will do everything it can to maintain a strong labor market and moderate price increases.

"My colleagues and i believe that this gradual process of normalization remains the appropriate one," powell said. Income and labor market remain strong. The u.S. Central bank, still under the leadership of powell’s predecessor janet yellen, had begun in 2015 to gradually push up the prime rate. Previously, there had been no interest rate hikes for almost ten years. After the financial crisis in 2008, the central bank pursued a virtually zero-interest policy.

The annual meeting in jackson hole is considered one of the most important informal events in the international notebanking scene. The president of the european central bank, mario draghi, did not show up this year.

Adenauer's grandson in iphofen

"Adenauer’s grandson" – an attribute that conservative politicians like to attach to themselves. Stephan werhahn, keynote speaker at the free voters’ new year’s reception in iphofen on wednesday evening, doesn’t have to:

he is a grandson of the first chancellor of the federal republic of germany and a hopeful of the free voters in the federal elections in september. They have appointed him as their top candidate. In iphofen, he spoke on the topic of "for solid finances in germany – but how?"

The atmosphere in the packed hall of the karl-knauf halle was correspondingly tense. Because werhahn’s switch to the free democrats after 40 years as a member of the CDU made headlines all over germany. In his introductory remarks, he also mentioned the reason for the change: the way his party and the current federal government are dealing with the euro crisis.

This began in 2008 with the banking crisis, in which, according to werhahn, bank regulation would have been necessary. When the euro crisis hit in 2010, it became clear to him that something was going in the wrong direction. Both the euro rescue at any price and the shift of competencies away from politics and towards summit meetings, brussels bureaucracy and the bailout umbrellas debilitate states and citizens.

"I consider saving the euro at any price to be the fundamental problem," werhahn says. He called for a reform of the banks on the one hand. This would require a return to the maastricht treaties: if a state failed to do so, it would have to be expelled from the euro – but not from the eu. These states had to be liable for their debts and be given their own currency.

With the support of the other states, the homework could be done. In werhahn’s opinion, however, this should not be done by the european central bank buying up government bonds. "As a last resort, it must also be possible for germany to remain in the euro zone," said werhahn – depending on the situation, this could be done together with other countries.

Because, in werhahn’s view, the euro is already causing collateral damage in germany. Due to the low interest rate policy, private retirement provision is already almost impossible today. In the next ten years, inflation will lead to the silent expropriation of the middle class and "slowly eat away at people’s wealth.

That’s why it makes sense for the free voters to get involved at the federal level. "We must implement a policy in berlin that is once again more aligned with the interests of the people."

That’s why he was also prepared to put his knowledge at the disposal of the free voters, "which was not possible in the union with its intellectual poverty.".

"I agree with many of the things you said," said hermann hadwiger, member of the savings bank board, in the ensuing discussion, such as depositor protection for bank customers, proximity to the burgers, and the approval of the bundestag. In other matters, however, hadwiger had quite different opinions. About the justification for low interest rates. The EU is only to blame to a small extent, and the saturated markets are primarily responsible for this.

The ECB’s purchase of government bonds is not a done deal, but who can predict the consequences if it does not happen?. Sometimes politicians have to make decisions that are different from those made by the bank of notes. This was the case with the financing of german unification, when inflation was feared due to the high level of debt. Hadwiger already sees a creeping inflation, but not a gross one. "The german is sometimes a bit hysterical," hadwiger said.

In good years, the state should retain something, hadwiger demanded at the end. Fur werhahn the democratic deficit between brussel and the burgers must be eliminated. For bernhard etzelmuller, entrepreneur and third on the podium, the euro is good for the german economy. But a limitation of the debt should be written into the constitution and living together in europe should be put on the same basis. "We should put our own house in order," etzelmuller said of germany’s indebtedness.

Cairo: police want to starve out islamist protest camps

The informant said that the implementation of the plan could take up to three months.

After that, the access to the protest camp around the rabea-al-adawija mosque is to be blocked in the next few days. The police will then attack the camp of the supporters of the ousted president mohammed mursi with trangas and water cannons. In addition, the water will be turned off to the protesters and food will be prevented from entering the tent city.

Numerous foreign diplomats had warned the interim government in recent weeks against a violent crackdown on the demonstrators who have occupied not only the streets around the mosque but also al-nahdha square in cairo.

The islamists are calling for the reinstatement of mursi, who was elected on 3 march. July had been deposed by the army after mass protests. They say they will remain in their tent city until this demand is met. Egyptian authorities hope, however, that some of the protesters will lose their desire to camp out on the streets for weeks to come.

Last week, the military-appointed interim president adli mansur declared that diplomatic efforts by western and arab states to resolve the crisis in egypt had failed. The european union nevertheless wants to stay involved.

On thursday, agyptian auben minister nabil fahmi received a call from his french counterpart laurent fabius. According to the eaves ministry in cairo, fabius expressed concern about the tensions between supporters of the different political camps. He also expressed his hope that a political, peaceful solution would soon be found.
